Skincare Order

Does it matter what order you apply your skincare? Does it matter in the day vs. at night?

Yes and yes.

Let's make this simple!

A general rule of thumb when you are unsure, is to apply products with the thinnest consistency first, and work your way up to the thickest. (See Dermstore's article on this here.)

By and large this means that you begin with cleansing, toner and then move into thicker substances such as lotions and creams.

  • ie: liquid to cream

Ready to break it down?

Morning:

Cleanse every morning, even if it's just soap and water.

After that I swear to god, if you do one other thing USE. SUNSCREEN.

If you can go the full route (and if your skin can handle several steps-- keep in mind your skin sometimes does better if you go a little easier on it), then it looks like this:

  • Toner

  • Serums

  • Eye Cream

  • Spot Treatments

  • Moisturizer

  • Face Oil

  • Sunscreen

Evening:

Again, if there's one thing you do, cleanse.

If you can only do two things, include your moisturizer.

If you can go the full route, it should look something like this:

  • Cleanser

  • Toner

  • Serums

  • Eye Cream

  • Spot Treatments

  • Moisturizer

That said, there are some variations! Depending on your skin's needs that day/hour/year, you may want to perform less steps. My rosacea makes my skin reeeeeaaaaaally sensitive, so if I can feel my skin cringing, I stop. I stop and moisturize, and I'm done. Take care of yourself!
