DON'T do this in 2023

Updated: Mar 19, 2023

I know this will sound cheesy. I know this will sound dumb. But seriously, for the love of god, do NOT do this thing.

If you are hard on yourself? Stop it.

I know, I know- easier said than done. That's why one of my only "goals" (and I could spend a whole post talking about goals so just trust me when I put the quotation marks there) for the New Year is to improve my self talk. That's it. Seriously.

It is so easy, especially if you grew up in a high-judgement environment, or you struggle with anxiety, to have really negative self-talk. Anywhere from "hey that could've gone better if you'd not been an idiot" to "you will never amount to anything and are worth less than the dirt under their toes" and trust me, I've been to each of these places. I've been all over the goddamn spectrum.

And I want to be clear, mental illness and/or disorders can make things like how we talk to ourselves a life-long struggle. Sooo I'm not going to pretend this will be easy. Just something to try to be aware of!

So next time I find myself berating myself for dropping the oatmilk on the floor again, I'm going to try to notice that my brain wants to do that- be mean to myself. That's my brain. That's my habit. Do I have to keep it up? No.

Will it be fixed the next time I drop the oatmilk? Absolutely not. But it may make it easier to correct.

So many of us struggle with mental illness, disorders or negative self-talk.

It's okay. Be kinder to yourself.

That's my commitment, to just try and do better at that. Want to join me? What are your New Year commitments?

Love this idea! I have been working on the way I talk in my brain for years now. And it is getting better. Slow but sure. The biggest bonus? As it gets better, I'm happier :) Question, do you replace the negative self-talk with a different thought or, as you notice and call out the negative self-talk, does it just stop naturally?
