when lemon water is bad

Lemon water is obviously an amazing way to start your day. According to BBC GoodFood, lemon water can not only increase hydration (obviously), it can aid digestion, support your skin, and even prevent kidney stones!

So, uh, yeah. What's the problem?

I finally know why lemon water is bad for ME

Let me clarify, lemon water is great for you (probably). But I've been chugging lemon water and it has actively not helped, and I finally know why.

One day I had lemonade made from real lemons, and I chugged it in under an hour and kept complaining that my mouth felt weird. My mouth felt fluffy. My lips were tingling. I kept saying to my sister "I feel kind of weird, do you think I ate something?" I seriously felt like something was medically wrong.

Yeah. Uhhhh, turns out I was having an allergic reaction. A mild one, thank god, but that's an allergy! When I have lemon-water I am essentially micro-dosing with little Jim-irritants.

Are you allergic to lemons too?

ree

According to Healthline, the most common symptoms of a citrus (or lemon) allergy are:

  • Red lips or gums

  • Mild swelling of lips or gums

  • Intense tingling or itching of the lips, throat or tongue

If you think you are experiencing a severe allergic reaction, seek medical attention right away!

If you find you have any of those symptoms, you may be allergic to whatever it is you ate or drank-- in my case, lemons.

Your body is unique!

This is why I think it's really important to remember that most advice is not universal. Lemon water can be really really helpful for most people, but it literally does not operate well with my body. And knowing your own body can help you take better care of it. You deserve that!
